currently chief minister of Karanataka. His formal political career began in 1994. He came into the limelight in politics by winning the Kanakapura parliamentary seat in 1996. In the run-up to the April-May 2004 assembly elections, he toured Karnataka to revive moribund JD-S units by infusing young blood and regrouping hundreds of splintered party cadres.
